The National Institute for Bioprocessing Research and Training (NIBRT) has been approached by the Kobe Biomedical Innovation Cluster (KBIC) to coordinate an Irish delegation visit to Kobe, Japan, planned for November 2026. The initiative presents a targeted opportunity for Irish companies in the advanced therapies sector to explore international collaboration and potential expansion into the Japanese market.

KBIC is seeking to partner with Irish organisations to apply for funding through the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO). The grant will support a study visit focused on networking, collaboration, and long-term strategic engagement, with the ultimate aim of enabling Irish companies to establish a presence in Kobe.

The proposed delegation would bring together a group of Irish companies working in advanced therapy medicinal products (ATMPs), an area of strong focus within KBIC. The programme is expected to include engagement with local industry leaders, research institutions, and innovation hubs within the Kobe biomedical ecosystem.

The JETRO grant is anticipated to cover travel and accommodation costs up to a value of $50,000, supporting participation from Irish delegates. A similar initiative hosted by KBIC in 2025 welcomed a delegation of seven companies (15 participants) from Melbourne, Australia, highlighting the cluster’s commitment to fostering international partnerships.

This initiative reflects continued efforts to strengthen global collaboration in the ATMP sector and to position Ireland-based companies within key international innovation ecosystems.
